More and more people are using generative AI to carry out tasks and social exchanges that once relied on direct human effort, often without disclosing that the communication is machine-generated. We increasingly encounter this shift in everyday interactions, even with people we know well, and often participate in it ourselves because it feels convenient and efficient.

Yet this quiet substitution is producing an invisible shift in how we experience and value intimacy. What may seem like a harmless optimization masks a deeper transformation in how we frame emotional labor and authenticity. By failing to disclose the machine’s role, we reinforce a perfectionist standard that subtly devalues the imperfections, hesitations, and contextual sensitivities that make human interaction meaningful. In doing so, we risk flattening our understanding of what intelligence is and how it should feel when we encounter it.
