To say to someone “you’re my lobster” was absurdly efficient not too long ago.

Kind of weird. An animal not especially soft, not especially graceful, and not especially romantic, turns into one of the most recognizable shorthand phrases for a significant other. A lobster is armored. It has claws. It lives in cold water. It does not seem like a natural emblem of tenderness.

But it works.

It’s a shortcut. It’s giving people a way to say something complicated in short form.
