In June 2024, Nike reported roughly 51.4 billion dollars in revenue for fiscal 2024, a new high but only about 1 percent above the previous year. In subsequent quarters, earnings commentary and analyst coverage increasingly treated Greater China less as a reliable growth engine and more as a swing factor in the company’s global story, especially as local competitors gained cultural momentum with younger consumers.

How Nike’s actions intersect with China‑specific trend signals such as China chic, state‑aligned development language, and digitally mediated influence.

In North America and Europe, Nike can still bend its own myth, evolving “Just Do It” into “Why Do It?” and speaking directly to anxiety and perfectionism without breaking the core promise of striving. In China, the same brand meets a very different mood. Domestic sportswear labels have grown as “China chic,” or guochao, has become a point of pride for Gen Z, and local consumers increasingly reach for home-grown brands to express that pride. The global script still works in the US and Europe. In China it keeps bumping into another cultural logic.
